Exploring the Roles of Family in Fostering Moral Values for Community Development in Nigeria

The family is widely recognised as the primary agent of socialisation and the foundational institution for transmitting moral values in any society. In the Nigerian context, where communities are confronted with rising insecurity, corruption, youth deviance, and erosion of traditional values, the role of the family in moral formation has become even more crucial. This paper examines the role of the Nigerian family in promoting moral values and how these values underpin sustainable community development. Drawing on social learning theory, structural functionalism, and ecological systems theory, the paper examines the conceptual links between family, moral values, and community development. It discusses specific family practices, such as primary socialisation, religious and cultural instruction, role modelling, discipline and monitoring, emotional bonding, and economic support, and shows how these shape the moral reasoning and behaviour of children and youth, with implications for peace, security, and social cohesion. The paper further analyses the challenges facing families in Nigeria, including poverty, single parenting, family breakdown, modernisation, media influence, and weak policy support. It concludes with recommendations for parents, religious bodies, schools, community leaders, and government on strengthening the moral and developmental functions of the family for the common good.
