3GPP PDU Set Framework: Release 19 Updates

Extended Reality (XR) applications demand substantial bandwidth, ultra-low latency and high refresh rates, challenging network performance. While 3GPP Release 18 introduced the Protocol Data Unit (PDU) Set based Quality of Service (QoS) framework to enable application-aware packet handling for XR traffic, Release 19 advances this by addressing dynamic traffic characteristics with enhanced burst signaling, expedited transfer mechanisms for latency-critical content, and refined guidelines for PDU Set Importance (PSI). These updates improve power management, scheduling, and resource allocation, strengthening the foundation for intelligent network handling and seamless immersive XR experiences using 3GPP networks.
