Quantification of Heavy Metals in Wastewater: A Critical Appraisal of Sophisticated Analytical Tools

Heavy metal contamination poses one of the most serious threats to environmental and human health in the 21st century. With the rapid industrialization and urban expansion witnessed across the globe, the discharge of metals such as Arsenic (As), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), and Chromium (Cr) into aquatic systems has reached alarming levels. These elements, classified among the most toxic and persistent heavy metals, often remain in the environment for extended periods and biomagnify through food webs. This, in turn, result in far-reaching consequences for aquatic biodiversity and human populations reliant on these water resources. To effectively understand variations in the concentrations of the mentioned above elements, a continuous and precise analytical surveillance is essential employing advanced technologies. In this study, Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) were employed to quantify 25 metals including both essential metals and toxic heavy metals in complex wastewater matrices. The methods were validated following international guidelines to ensure their suitability for trace-level detection in environmental samples. Key validation parameters such as specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and measurement uncertainty were evaluated to prove the method’s robustness and reliability. Additionally, the environmental sustainability of the analytical approach was assessed using the Analytical GREEness (AGREE) metric, providing a comprehensive view of the ecological footprint. This study emphasizes the dual importance of high analytical performance and green chemistry principles, highlighting the need for sustainable yet precise monitoring strategies to manage heavy metal pollution effectively.
