A Decade of Research on Gender and Mental Health: Trends, Insights, and Future Directions (2014–2024)

Mental health issues have become a global concern due to the increasing prevalence of psychological disorders, with gender playing a significant role in shaping the dynamics of mental health. This study aims to analyze the relevance, distribution, and direction of research development on gender and mental health through a bibliometric-systematic literature review (SLR) approach using the Scopus database from 2014 to 2024. A total of 500 Scopus articles were selected and then analyzed using VOSviewer to map publication trends, keywords, and affiliations. The results show a significant increase in the number of publications since 2015, with contributions dominated by the United States, Europe, and China. Frequently emerging research themes include mental health, gender differences, depression, anxiety, resilience, and transgender. Theoretically, this study confirms that gender is a key determinant in understanding human psychological resilience and vulnerability, as well as access to mental health services. The practical implications of this study encourage gender-sensitive interventions, inclusive policymaking, and balanced global collaboration. In addition, this study identifies research gaps in developing countries and highlights the importance of implementing mental health strategies that integrate cultural, social, and spiritual factors.
