A Study on Challenges Facing Small and Medium Enterprises in India

This research investigates the multifaceted challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Surat, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, and Vadodara, crucial drivers of India's economic growth. Data collected from 121 valid responses through a structured questionnaire revealed significant issues in financial access, taxation, managerial and accounting skills, human resource development, market access, business education, and technology adoption. Key findings include restricted access to capital, complex taxation systems, managerial skill deficits, and challenges in technology adoption, corroborating existing literature. However, divergences were noted in the adequacy of accounting skills and successful technology integration in some SMEs. These insights underscore the necessity for targeted interventions and policy reforms to enhance SME resilience and promote sustainable economic progress, providing a robust framework for supporting SME growth and sustainability.
