Revealing the Hidden Risks in Generic Glutaraldehyde: Adulteration, Instability, and Microbicidal Variability

Abstract This study presents a comprehensive assessment of 36 commercially available generic glutaraldehyde products used in oil and gas microbial control programs, benchmarked against a high-purity industrial reference. Multi-tiered evaluation including titrimetric, chromatographic, and thermal stability analyses revealed significant quality discrepancies. While 53% of the products passed titrimetric assay for total aldehyde content, only 18% met both active ingredient and purity requirements upon HPLC and GC-MS evaluation. Formaldehyde and glyoxal adulterants were detected in 31% and 11% of the samples, respectively, raising concerns over toxicity, efficacy, and regulatory compliance. Physicochemical analysis showed that only 25% of products met the optimal pH window (3.1–4.5), and 28% adhered to acceptable methanol limits (≤0.5%). Thermal aging further revealed active ingredient degradation up to 12.9%, accompanied by discoloration, monomer release, and post-dilution polymerization in over 89% of samples. Microbiological performance, assessed through log reduction assays before and after heat aging, confirmed that adulterated or unstable formulations lost up to 70% of their antimicrobial efficacy post-aging. In contrast, the control product remained chemically stable and biologically effective throughout. These results underscore the critical importance of sourcing glutaraldehyde from reliable and validated suppliers. Poor-quality formulations not only compromise microbial control but also pose serious risks to health, safety, equipment integrity, and reservoir sustainability, reinforcing the need for stringent procurement and quality assurance protocols in oilfield operations.
