STARFISH - Good practices dossier

Fishing remains one of the most hazardous maritime occupations, due to demanding working conditions (weather, handling operations, machinery and fatigue), which makes safety training essential. At the same time, regulatory and societal expectations increasingly require that sustainable fishing — including environmental impacts, pollution prevention and responsible management of resources — be fully embedded within training pathways. In this context, the European project STARFISH aims to modernise fishers’ Basic Training, making it more accessible and better aligned with the realities of the profession, notably through digital, modular and multilingual formats, in line with the requirements of the revised STCW-F. This dossier, produced within the framework of the project, brings together good practices in training for safety and sustainable fishing identified across Europe. It offers practical reference points (pedagogical approaches, tools and delivery methods) to support training providers and stakeholders in improving the effectiveness, transferability and attractiveness of training, and in underpinning the development of future STARFISH modules.
