Therapeutic Application of Postbiotics in the Management of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

The prevalence of sedentary lifestyles and diets high in sugar and fat coupled with chronic stress has been associated with several health problems, such as hormonal imbalances, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. These lifestyle modifications are implicated in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Gut dysbiosis is central to many of these conditions, and therefore, postbiotics help in restoring gut microbiome homeostasis. Currently, postbiotics are regarded as an emerging therapeutic approach rather than a recognized clinical treatment for PCOS. This review article aims to determine the mechanistic aspects of postbiotics for PCOS management. PCOS is characterized by insulin resistance, inflammation, and gut dysbiosis. Postbiotics promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria by improving metabolic function, modulating hormone levels, and reducing inflammation. The postbiotics may help regulate the levels of androgen hormones by modulating the gut–brain axis. The benefits of postbiotics could be used to manage PCOS.
