The continuation of the conservation and restoration project of the Paleologi Castle in Casale Monferrato (Alessandria). The western bastions and the southern countrescarp

Following the conclusion of the first conservative restoration work involving the walls of the northern bastions of the Paleologi castle in Casale Monferrato (Alessandria) in April 2023, the Municipal Administration has obtained funding from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport - Department for Public Works and Housing Policies with Directorial Decree prot. no. 18823 of 15/04/2024, to continue the conservative restoration of the western façade, including the structural consolidation of the southern counterscarp and the implementation of energy efficiency measures. The redevelopment of the western bastions aims to continue the enhancement of the ancient fortified building, adding quality to the tourist route that crosses the city's historic centre and finds its natural continuation in the fortress overlooking the river Po. The planned intervention was also an opportunity to broaden our knowledge of the castle with the aid of specific diagnostic surveys, updating and completing the morphological and stratigraphic reading and the state of decay of the building, finalising the restoration works. The consolidation and static securing of the south counterscarp, in front of the Pavia Market, were carried out with the aim of safeguarding the safety of passers-by, as well as the conservation of the asset, by counteracting a subsidence detected on the entire perimeter and for the entire height of the circular crown along a stretch of approximately 150 m. Lastly, the energy efficiency intervention was aimed at relamping the rooms already in operation and characterised by heavy use, significantly reducing the costs of increased energy consumption.
