Electronic car braking systemsBraking system are currently undergoing a technological change, which is presented in this chapter. First, the functions of the braking system are discussed. Afterwards, the technology of the conventional brake system with vacuum brake booster, the electric booster-based braking system and the electrohydraulic and electromechanical by-wire braking systems will be presented. A sub-chapter describes how braking of vehicles can be achieved by means of an electric powertrain, thereby taking into account the actual trend of electrification of the powertrain. The trend toward automated driving (AD)Automated driving (AD) has an even greater influence on the further development of the braking system. Requirements on the availability of the braking system increase with the degree of automation of the vehicle guidance. To meet these new requirements, technical redundancies are integrated into the braking system. This leads to different concepts for future brake systems.
