Utilizing Haptic Interaction for Learning Enhancement - Exploring the Educational Applications of Infrared Sensor Frames

This paper presents the findings of a long-term study on the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) into early childhood education, with a focus on preserving the essential value of hands-on, sensory-rich experiences. The research explores how interactive digital tools can enhance learning environments without compromising tactile engagement. A nationwide survey conducted in Japan identified key barriers to ICT adoption, particularly educators’ concerns that technology might supplant physical interaction. In response, we propose a low-threshold, scalable digital wall prototype that combines an infrared sensor frame with Microsoft PowerPoint. This solution is designed to support hands-on learning, reduce the burden of content creation for educators, and function seamlessly within familiar classroom settings. A distinctive contribution of this study lies in its emphasis on the seamless integration of digital and physical interaction using widely accessible tools, while remaining sensitive to cultural values in Japanese early childhood education. The proposed approach offers valuable insights into globally applicable strategies for developing interactive learning technologies.
