Proceedings of the Third Workshop Organized by the IAFSS Working Group on Measurement and Computation of Fire Phenomena (MaCFP-3)

On October 22, 2023 the “Working Group on Measurement and Computation of Fire Phenomena” (the “MaCFP Working Group”) organized its third workshop (MaCFP-3) as a pre-event to the 14th Symposium of the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS), which was hosted in Tsukuba, Japan. This report summarizes the main findings of MaCFP-3 which include: (1) new experimental measurements and numerical simulations focused on separate condensed and gas-phase phenomena, (2) new experimental measurements and numerical simulations focused on coupled condensed/gas phase cases in the form of flame spread over MaCFP-PMMA, and (3) an introduction to a new Radiation Heat Transfer Subgroup focusing on creating new radiation benchmark problems for fire-related cases in both the gas- and the condensed-phase. Results include discussions of the effects of material property calibration and variability, model grid sensitivity, modeling choices, and connections between variability in gas- and/or solid-phase model outputs and their impact on predictions of flame spread and fire growth. Suggestions for next steps in preparation for the MaCFP-4 workshop (La Rochelle, France; June 2026) are proposed.
