Comprehensive and Hardware-Friendly Metric for Shifting-Based PAPR Reduction of DMT Systems

In this paper, a comprehensive and hardware-friendly metric is presented for the dc shifting-based peak-toaverage power ratio (PAPR) reduction techniques of discrete multitone (DMT) systems. Although the PAPR has been widely used as a promising metric in selecting the compensation offset, it has a limitation that it can be minimized by naively applying a large offset that may incur serious potential drawbacks. To suppress both the PAPR and the drawbacks, the product of the PAPR and the peak power is defined to be a substitute metric. To circumvent the complexity increase, an approximate square operation that can be realized by hard wiring is adopted. As a result, the proposed metric successfully remedies the limitation of the PAPR while not incurring additional hardware overhead at all.
