Performance of the new R6060 controller for the EASY5000 Power System

Abstract A comparative test of the command execution delays between the two CAEN controllers, A1676A and R6060, has been done. The first is the controller presently used by the Power System of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer, the latter is the one that will replace the A1676A during the Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). The measurements have been performed on a rack in the ATLAS cavern, serving a slice of the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) detector. Four crates were used for the comparison. Measurements were performed by using a C routine based on the CAEN HV Wrapper library, using the PC internal clock as timing reference. The results show that with the implemented setup, composed of EASY3000 crates and modules, the new controller R6060 is between 40 and 80 times faster than the present one. When the ATLAS Muon Power System will be upgraded to the EASY5000 modules, an additional improvement, not yet quantified, is expected.
