Kinematic Substitution: A Material-Agnostic Framework for Eliminating Adhesives and Fluid Power in High-Speed Automation

Industrial automation has historically relied on consumable-based or fluid-powered processes-adhesives, hotmelt glues, reinforced tapes, thermal sealing, and pneumatic actuation-to manipulate and join deformable substrates. These approaches introduce stochastic behavior, maintenance overhead, and environmental waste, and they scale poorly under modern sustainability and throughput demands. This paper introduces kinematic substitution, a material-agnostic automation paradigm that replaces chemistry-dependent and pressuredependent processes with deterministic electromechanical architectures. The framework formalizes how high-bandwidth servo systems , geometric constraint mechanisms, and energy-based joining methods can be synthesized to achieve high-speed, zeroconsumable, and fully recyclable manufacturing workflows. A generalized kinematic model is presented to unify substrate motion, process-head motion, and joining dynamics across textiles, paper, films, and poly-composites. Conceptual case studies in mechanical stitching, ultrasonic welding, and high-speed sewing illustrate how kinematic substitution improves repeatability, reduces total cost of ownership, and enables sustainable, highthroughput automation. The work establishes a design philosophy for next-generation manufacturing systems that is grounded in geometry and deterministic motion rather than chemistry and fluid power.
