En storgård från övergångstiden i Eskilstorp, Skåne

During the period c. 950 – 1050 CE a thorough societal transformation was initiated in south-western Scania. Phenomena such as Christianization, ring forts, royal farms and early towns, minting, rune stones, silver hoards and Baltic ware, have all been linked to the Jelling dynasty's ambitions for power and expansion within the framework of the formation of the Danish kingdom. An analysis of settlement development in southwestern Scania indicates that the establishing of large farms intensified c. 1000. The starting point for this article is a recently excavated large farm in Eskilstorp, south of Malmö, which was established at this time. The interdisciplinary archaeological project was carried out in collaboration between The Archaeologists, National Historical Museums and Sydsvensk Arkeologi AB. The article focuses on ownership and actorship, buildings, economy and production, as well as the outcome of systematic metal detection.
