A Live Experience of Preclinical Studies for 'Paper of the Future' with the PRECISE-TBI Resources

Abstract: The PRE-Clinical Interagency reSearch resourcE-Traumatic Brain Injury (PRECISE-TBI) is a community-based consortium for developing standards, resources, and tools in preclinical studies. The PRECISE-TBI’s overarching goal is to bridge the translational gap and accelerate the development of new strategies to prevent and treat patients affected by TBI. The PRECISE-TBI Education Focus Area aims in building relevant TBI resources for blast-related research and works closely with others to provide issues regarding blast injury and outcomes related to the military health community and civilians. We use this focus as an example to systemically test each of the PRECISE-TBI tools to guide development and ensure that they serve user needs. First, we provide a ‘use case’ illustrating how the PRECISE-TBI minimum viable product (MVP) can be used to support Open Field Blast (OFB) TBI research. PRECISE-TBI resources, including the Model Catalog and the Open Data Commons for TBI (ODC-TBI), represent a researcher-friendly ecosystem specialized for preclinical TBI research to create a truly reusable research environment. We then describe how the PRECISE-TBI MVP can be used to publish the ‘Paper of the Future’ (PoF) when publishing preclinical TBI studies. The Paper of the Future extends the traditional research article by publishing the step-by-step protocol/workflow at protocols.io and sharing AI-ready original datasets as independent digital objects that adhere to Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) principles. The use of FAIR practices such as persistent identifiers and rich metadata provides enduring links across the different outputs. These datasets were curated by mapping the community Common Data Elements (CDEs), cross-linking to other relevant publications and research resources for enhanced usability. These studies illustrate an experience demonstrating compliance with the NIH data management & sharing (DMS) mandate, as well as implementing standards and community-vetted best practices to make preclinical TBI data FAIR. Such practices, using next-generation tools, allow us to leverage shared datasets with increased transparency, rigor, and reproducibility to promote reusing the preclinical TBI datasets to identify and evaluate novel target therapies.
