Design and Development of a Drone Utilizing 5G Technology for Logistics and Monitoring Purposes

Abstract This study introduces a 5G-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform designed to overcome current limitations in control range and connectivity. Harnessing 5G’s low-latency, high-bandwidth communication, the UAV achieves instantaneous data exchange over extended distances and improved autonomous operation. The system integrates a bespoke 5G communication module for uninterrupted long-range connectivity, dual high-resolution optical and thermal imaging sensors for comprehensive situational awareness, and advanced navigation software with AI-driven obstacle avoidance. It features a lightweight, modular airframe supporting adaptable payloads, as well as efficient power management and cooperative swarm networking for extended flight durations and broader coverage. Preliminary results demonstrate stable long-range communication, high-quality data acquisition, millisecond-level responsiveness, and a marked reduction in navigational errors. These capabilities have broad implications for transportation, surveillance, logistics, and emergency response applications, and represent a significant step toward next-generation intelligent 5G-connected drone ecosystems.
