The Petro-Dopamine Loop:Geopolitical Inertia and Unequal Exchange in the Iranian System

This paper investigates the concept of a “Petro-Dopamine Loop” as a theoretical framework to explain the persistent geopolitical inertia and the nature of unequal exchange within the Islamic Republic of Iran’s economic and political structure. We argue that the deep, structural reliance on hydrocarbon rent—the “Petro” component—creates a self-reinforcing political and cognitive feedback mechanism akin to a neurological reward system—the “Dopamine” component. This loop fosters political complacency, suppresses diversification, entrenches rent-seeking behavior among elites, and ultimately locks the nation into a position of asymmetric dependency in the global system, characterized by unequal exchange.
