IELTS Examination in India: A Review of Last Five Years Market Trends (2020–2025)

This paper examines the evolution of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) market in India over the last five years (2020-2025), with a focus on test-taker volumes, performance trends, and broader market implications.Drawing on publicly available data from IDP IELTS reports and secondary sources, the study analyses fluctuations in candidate numbers, average band scores, and their impact on key stakeholders, including candidates, coaching providers, and the employment and migration ecosystem.The findings indicate a sharp decline in IELTS participation during the COVID-19 period, followed by a strong post-pandemic recovery peaking in 2022-2023.However, a noticeable downturn is observed in 2024-2025, largely attributed to changing immigration policies in major destination countries, increased scrutiny of international student mobility, the emergence of alternative English proficiency pathways, and economic uncertainty.Despite reduced test volumes, average band scores of Indian candidates have remained relatively stable, suggesting that the decline is demand-driven rather than proficiency-related.The paper concludes that while short-term volatility has affected the IELTS coaching industry and aspirants' migration plans, long-term demand for English language certification in India is likely to persist.Future growth is expected to be shaped by diversification of destination countries, digital test delivery, and evolving global mobility patterns.
