Initiatory Preparation and Practice in the Anglican Tradition

Abstract This chapter argues that processes of preparation for baptism and confirmation have changed significantly over the centuries. The catechumenate developed in early Christianity as a means of transmitting the faith to those who had come to Christianity as adults. With the rise of infant baptism quam primum during the Middle Ages, Christian formation became entirely post-baptismal. Beginning in the sixteenth century and for much of Anglican history, this pattern continued, with more extensive didactic instruction for children prior to their confirmation and admission to communion. A similar pattern persisted with the introduction of a rite of adult baptism during the seventeenth century, responding to needs emerging during colonization. In recent decades, some Anglican Provinces have reintroduced a catechumenal process for unbaptized adults, families and sponsors of infants, and baptized adults seeking renewed or deepened faith, with a renewed emphasis on the church as a baptizing community.
