The Triduum in the <i>Book of Common Prayer</i>

Abstract The loss and eventual recovery and redevelopment of proper liturgies for the paschal Triduum is a notable feature of the history of the Book of Common Prayer. This chapter explores the background of these rites from the early and medieval church; traces their development, truncation, and recovery in Prayer Books from the Reformation to the modern period; and explores the features of the Triduum liturgies in contemporary Anglican Prayer Books. Attention is given to the ecclesiological shift that lies behind the renewed interest in Triduum rites and to issues that animate continued discussion of their use, design, and performance.
