Analyzing the Economic Development and Changing Occupational Structure in India

This research examines the deep interconnection between India's economic development and its occupational structure over the past seven decades. By integrating historical data with established theories of structural transformation, it documents how India has shifted from a predominantly agrarian economy toward industry and services, while highlighting persistent imbalances (e.g. under-developed manufacturing and large informal sector). It compares India's experience with other developing economies and consider global influences (e.g. India–China trade, global South dynamics, climate change). This research integrates historical data with structural-change theory and outlines forecasting frameworks (statistical and machine-learning) for sectoral employment and GDP growth; it also presents an empirical plan and robustness checks. Finally, the research offers policy recommendations — from skill development to industrial strategy — aimed at fostering inclusive growth and providing suggestions for policymakers in India and other emerging nations.
