Potential of Bacteria Degrading Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in Domestic Wastewater on Barrang Lompo Island, Makassar City

Domestic wastewater treatment is an important environmental challenge that must be addressed, especially in island regions with limited access to resources and infrastructure.Bioremediation using degrading bacteria is now an effective environmentally friendly alternative.Native bacteria that produce biosurfactants can increase the availability of hydrocarbons, thereby accelerating the degradation process of pollutants.This study aims to identify local bacteria from domestic wastewater and test the effectiveness of bacteria in degrading Total Suspended Solids (TSS) levels in domestic wastewater on Spermonde Island.This study was conducted in the Spermonde Islands, Makassar City.Wastewater samples were taken from six locations and analyzed using the MALDI-TOF MS test.Effectiveness testing was carried out in a simple bioreactor with a completely randomized design (CRD) that had two factors, namely bacterial concentration (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%) and incubation time (2, 4, 6, 8 days) and was only repeated once.The results showed that the Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain was effective in reducing TSS from 154 mg/l to 5 mg/l during an incubation period of 8 days with an inoculum concentration of 15% and a reduction efficiency of 96.75%.Variations in inoculum concentration did not significantly affect TSS reduction (p > 0.05), while incubation time had a significant effect (p < 0.05) with the highest efficiency on day 8. P. aeruginosa isolates were effective in reducing TSS levels in domestic wastewater, with incubation time as the dominant factor in the degradation process.These findings indicate the potential of P. aeruginosa as an efficient bioremediation agent for addressing TSS pollution and as a practical solution to support sustainable waste management on small islands.It can also be integrated with household-scale communal wastewater treatment plants to improve wastewater treatment effectiveness.
