Visible Tax Dividends and Support for Carbon Pricing – Evidence from Austria (Follow-Up-Study)

With this Addendum to our pre-analysis plan (Addendum1_follow-up), we pre-register a follow- up study, which we plan to carry out in February 2026. In 2025, after the initial data collection in 2024, the new Austrian government removed the “Klimabonus’’ due to budgetary limitations, while keeping the carbon tax in place (https://www.oesterreich.gv.at/de/themen/umwelt_und_klima/klima_und_umweltschutz/klimabonus; https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/07/climate/austria-carbon-tax-klimabonus.html#:~:text=Austria's%20leaders%20decided%20keep%20the,supporters%20of%20sharper%20emissions%20reductions). Thus, in 2025 Austrian residents did not receive the Klimabonus, and the last time they received it was in 2024, right before our initial data collection. This serves as a testbed to test the extent to which Austrian residents realize that they did not get the Klimabonus in 2025 and whether such realization is associated with different levels of (real-world and stated) support for carbon pricing.
