Science Diplomacy: Theoretical Framework, EU Policies and the Croatian Perspective - Introductory Lecture for IRMO Researchers

This presentation was delivered as an introductory capacity-building lecture for staff of the Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO, Zagreb) in the context of IRMO's engagement with the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance. It covers the conceptual foundations of science diplomacy, including the AAAS/Royal Society tripartite typology, knowledge diplomacy, and soft power, traces the historical development of the field from CERN (1954) to the forthcoming EU Council Recommendation (2026), and maps the current EU institutional landscape (Global Approach to R&I, five-pillar European framework, Horizon Europe Cluster 2 call, COST Action SiDnet). The final sections address Croatia's position within European science diplomacy networks and IRMO's potential role as a national hub for science diplomacy research and capacity building.
