Blockchain-Anchored Zero-Trust Communications for Energy Storage Systems

Energy storage systems are used to provide backup energy to microgrids and other energy users when their main source of power is interrupted. In this paper, we examine energy storage systems and their protection against cyber-attacks. Energy storage systems offer power delivery but are undersecured at the grid edge. We present a three-part architecture that integrates an inline edge security gateway (policy enforcement point) at each energy storage string, a routed zero-trust overlay for authenticated, segmented communications, and a permissioned trust ledger that produces tamper-evident operational logs. The design employs DTLS 1.3 [1], mutual certificate-based authentication, and micro-segmentation; for public-key operations, we adopt NIST post-quantum algorithms (FIPS 203/204/205 [2][3][4]) while retaining AES-GCM 256 or ChaCha20-Poly1305 for record protection and HKDF-SHA256/384 for the key schedule per TLS 1.3 [5] for symmetric protection. We discuss alignment with NIST SP 800-207 [6], IEC 62443-3-3 [7], UL 2900-2-2 [8], California SB 327 [9], and NERC CIP-015-1 [10], and outline a deployment roadmap for utility and defense microgrids.
