Simulation analysis of thermal stress and optimization of temperature control measures for the roller-compacted concrete gravity dam

Temperature control and crack prevention are critical for ensuring the structural safety of RCC gravity dam. Addressing the risks of excessive temperature and cracking during construction, this study establishes a full-dam finite element model incorporating site-specific material properties, construction parameters, and thermodynamic boundary conditions. Using dynamic tracking and feedback simulation technology, the evolution of the temperature and stress fields from construction through operation is simulated. Results indicate that the maximum internal stress in RCC was generally below 1.5 MPa, while in conventional concrete it was below 2.5 MPa, typically occurring near the end of the primary cooling phase. The stress safety factor was greater than 1.7 for most placements. However, in some placements, the maximum internal stress safety factor was less than 1.7 due to stress concentration. The simulated temperature history closely matches the measured temperature data from various placements. Consequently, the derived stress analysis results are reliable and validated against actual monitoring data. This provides a solid basis for optimizing concrete temperature control measures.
