The field of inner development for sustainability has undergone a remarkable transition in less than a decade — from a scattered, marginal literature to a recognised research domain generating over two thousand citations annually by 2025. This essay traces that trajectory through citation data drawn from Google Scholar, examining the founding papers that established a shared vocabulary around 2020–21, the institutional catalysts that accelerated growth thereafter, and the geographic and thematic contours of the field as it now stands. Key contributions from researchers including Christine Wamsler, Zack Walsh, Joanna Böhme, and Christopher Ives are situated within the broader intellectual currents they represent: transformative learning in higher education, contemplative practice and climate governance, relational ontology, and leadership development.
