Hydrogen Blending in the Current Natural Gas Infrastructure as a Feasible Energy Security Option

India’s National Energy Policy (NEP) 2017 aims to ensure energy access, security, sustainability, and renewable energy targets 40% of power from sustainable fuels by 2030. One of the most important pathways to reaching the zero-carbon agenda is transitioning to a green hydrogen economy through integrating renewable energy sources. Hydrogen blending in natural gas infrastructure can offer potential solutions to these challenges. However, Hydrogen requires special safety precautions for handling and storage because of its high flammability and non-detectable fire. Past technical feasibility studies revealed compatible blending ratios and environmental impact assessments quantified significant emissions reductions and air quality improvements. The present study explores the specifics of the technicalities of hydrogen blending in a natural gas network, focusing on emissions reduction, energy efficiency, etc. The analysis is further broken down for technical feasibility into existing infrastructure details, analysis of associated risks, the findings of earlier executed hydrogen blending projects, and conclusion. The objective is to give a summary of present situation and future visions of hydrogen blending in India regarding energy content and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
