The history of scientific schools reflects the evolution of human culture. Having originated in the Ancient World, and taking shape in Modern times within the framework of research laboratories, institutes, and academies, they continue to develop in the format of interregional and international collaborations, contributing to social progress. Currently, the scientific school is understood in two ways – as a system of scientific views, as well as a community of scientists adhering to them. At the same time, in pedagogy, scientific schools should be distinguished from authorial, as well as from methodological systems. The purpose of the article is to reveal the context of the formation and current characteristics of the scientific school “Theory and Methodology of General Environmental Education” of the Russian Academy of Education. The methodological basis of the research is the historical and pedagogical approach, among the methods used are scientific analysis, as well as general scientific generalization and forecasting. The article presents the history of its formation (since the 1970s) and geographical coverage, main areas of activity, participants, the results of modern fundamental and applied research, educational and methodological developments, as well as the prospects for the development of this scientific school, which received official academic status (institutionalized) in 2025. Special attention is paid to the preparation and implementation of concepts, standards, programs and technologies that ensure that students master the patterns of interaction between nature, man and society, and the principles of sustainable development at both global and individual levels. In the future, it is planned to deepen research in the field of interdisciplinary specifics of environmental education, its digital transformation, the development of new formats of scientific and methodological cooperation and interdepartmental partnership. The combination of traditions and innovations will help preserve and enhance the potential of Russian science to ensure environmental well-being and preserve the environment in the interests of present and future generations of Russians.
