Origami honeycomb material of designable deformation derived from Miura-ori patterns

Abstract This paper studies an origami honeycomb material derived from Miura-ori patterns, which is composed of Miura-ori units and corner elements stacked in a specific pattern with Negative Poisson’s ratio. The research systematically investigates geometric configuration, deformation modes, energy absorption mechanisms of this origami honeycomb by theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. The feasibility of this theoretical analysis is validated through studies on the compressive performance of gradient origami honeycombs. This origami honeycomb exhibits predictable deformation modes and theoretically tractable mechanical response. The origami honeycomb demonstrates exceptional deformation tunability, as its mechanical behavior can be regulated by adjusting geometric parameters, such as dihedral angles, initial folding angles, and height of corner elements, thereby enabling performance optimization for diverse engineering applications.
