Visible light metalens for advanced automotive optics

Light projection systems are essential in the automotive domain, where the growing demand for both interior and exterior lighting requires more energy-efficient and compact solutions. Multiple locations are possible to integrate a light projector into the car to ensure better communication with other road users for optimum safety. However, all these current requests are in HeadLamps/RearLamps, where module compactness is critical. Therefore, this study presents a novel approach to design compact light projector systems by implementing dielectric metasurfaces for automotive applications. By leveraging precise control over the phase, amplitude, and polarization of the light beam, metasurfaces enable higher light efficiency, material and size reduction and compact device design, offering a viable path toward advanced, lightweight, and space-efficient light projection systems for next-generation vehicles.
