Education as an Equalizer in the Era of Digital Divides

Education has long been seen as a transformative equalizer, enabling individuals and societies to overcome barriers of class, geography, and socio-economic background. In the digital era, however, this promise is threatened by persistent digital divides, including unequal access to technology, disparities in digital literacy, and limited capacity for meaningful participation. This chapter critically examines how higher education particularly in international contexts can redefine equity to ensure inclusion and justice. It explores divides across infrastructure, skills, and cultural participation, considering implications for international student mobility, digital learning, and institutional practices. Drawing on global and Indian perspectives, it argues that equity must be deliberately embedded into policy, pedagogy, and technological design, offering a framework for digitally just, culturally responsive, and sustainable higher education.
