AI-Generated Content Role in English Language Reading Skills

The chapter has explored the role of AI-generated Content (AIGC) in improving reading skills among EFL students. The chapter also explores the challenges and ethical considerations in applying AIGC. Based on a comprehensive literature analysis, by applying the transformative role of AIGC in reading English effectively, reading content can be enriched to fulfil individual needs. Reading support provided by AI-based tools includes content comprehension and summarisation, paraphrasing and vocabulary acquisition, development of interactive reading exercises, personalised feedback and instructional scaffolding. However, critical challenges that need to be taken into consideration by the stakeholders in EFL education are data privacy and ethics, accessibility and digital literacy, academic integrity and overreliance, and accuracy and bias of AIGC. A call is thus made for collaboration for developing strategies among teachers, policymakers, and researchers to address the issues.
