Two-photon augmented reality glasses for testing of vision

Current AR systems often rely on waveguides, which degrade real-world image quality by dimming or distorting ambient light. Two-photon vision offers an alternative by using near-infrared light (800 to 1300nm) to stimulate retinal photoreceptors via nonlinear absorption. This allows high-contrast, sharp augmented content without compromising the view of the physical environment. The effect occurs only when the beam is focused on the retina, making the AR content invisible to bystanders. We are developing a prototype two-photon AR headset and will evaluate its performance through visual tests, with potential applications in ophthalmic diagnostics such as two-photon microperimetry.
