Ultrastable photonic microwave oscillators: toward next-generation devices

Photonic microwave synthesizers based on optical frequency division offer a major leap in generating ultrastable, low-noise microwave signals—far outperforming conventional oscillators. By dividing the frequency of an extremely stable optical signal, these systems produce microwave outputs with exceptional purity and long-term stability. We highlight key challenges in transferring optical stability to the microwave domain and demonstrate a practical solution using digital cross-correlation techniques for rapid and accurate microwave signal characterization. Next-generation concepts for rugged, rack-mountable ultrastable synthesizers—designed to integrate all essential components for autonomous operation—are discussed, paving the way for real-world deployment in demanding applications such as radar and communications.
