From dosimetry to practical applications of photobiomodulation

This presentation covers two linked studies on commercially available LED-based photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) devices. The first established validated methods for measuring irradiance and spectral output across various PBMT devices and discusses the significant variability in currently utilized methods and resulting metrics, underscoring the need for standardized dosimetry across the field. Results from this PBMT validation work guided the design and implementation of a randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial in a military population assessing PBMT’s effects on inflammatory biomarkers, stress markers, heart rate variability, sleep metrics, and subjective wellness. Results of these combined research efforts provides a foundation for evidence-based clinical application and future research in PBMT wellness interventions.
