Validating UNS S30416 (1.4682, 316A) As a High-Performance Alternative to UNS S31603 Austenitic Stainless Steel

Abstract The austenitic stainless steel grade S31603 is a benchmark material for applications requiring high corrosion resistance and excellent formability. S30416 is a new-generation austenitic grade designed as a high-performance and economical alternative to S31603, offering equivalent or enhanced properties without process modification. A validation program compared S30416 and S31603 across corrosion, mechanical and joining performances. Corrosion testing included electrochemical tests, salt spray test (ASTM(1) B117), and ferric chloride immersions (a modified ASTM G48 - Method A) on both base metal and laser-welded samples. S30416 exhibited equivalent or superior resistance to S31603. Mechanical evaluation via tensile tests (NF EN ISO(2) 6892-1), forming limit curve (NF EN ISO 12004-2), and drawing limit ratio (NF EN 1669) confirmed S30416’s comparable mechanical behavior, ductility, and work-hardening characteristics to S31603. Joining performance was assessed through laser-welding and brazing behavior with copper, specifically targeting heat exchanger applications. Laser-welded S30416 components exhibited slightly higher strength than S31603. S30416 also demonstrated excellent brazing behavior. The study validates that S30416 is a reliable and seamless substitute for S31603, matching S31603’s performance in formability and corrosion resistance while offering advantages in post-weld strength and brazing precision. This makes S30416 material of choice for marine, chemical processing, and heat exchanger industries.
