The Bermuda Triangle of CP: Coordinated Interference Testing and Current Path Discovery

Abstract This paper presents the methodology, coordination effort, and key findings from a comprehensive cathodic protection (CP) interference investigation spanning multiple pipeline operators. The objective was to assess the presence of stray current interference between systems and to improve cross-operator understanding of how interconnected infrastructure can influence CP performance. The testing program involved deploying over 50 stationary data loggers (SDLs) at strategically selected locations, combined with interruption of more than 100 rectifiers and CP bonds. A high level of coordination between participating operators ensured no overlap in interruption cycles, allowing for clean data and accurate attribution of observed effects. More than 6,000 data points were collected and analyzed to identify where interference could be present, trace current flow behavior, and isolate unexpected influence zones. The results demonstrate the critical value of collaborative testing, thorough equipment tracking, and comprehensive data analysis. Shared planning and execution of interference surveys between operators remain essential for detecting and mitigating stray current risks in today’s complex pipeline environments.
