A Comparison of Autoclave and Full Ring Pipe Testing for Carbon Capture Gathering Networks

Abstract There is a general lack of data for corrosion testing in gas phase CO2 streams particularly in Carbon Capture and Storage applications where contaminants including SOx, NOx and Oxygen are present under excursion conditions with water present. Testing of pipe material under consideration for a U.K. based CCS project to determine the potential corrosion rates in the event of a 30-day shut-in has been conducted. Testing has been carried out on a full section of carbon steel high frequency induction welded line pipe closed with pressure-retaining flanges and also on test coupons extracted from the pipe material mounted inside. In addition to the testing of the pipe section, identical parallel testing was conducted in an autoclave to determine if the corrosion rate of the corrosion coupons and Linear Polarisation Resistance probe would be significantly affected by the exposed pipe wall section causing saturation of iron in the test solution. Further to the direct comparison of pipe section and autoclave testing, corrosion coupons were placed in the vapour phase, waterline and submerged in the test solution to determine specific effects which are not available from CO2 corrosion models.
