Abstract The increasing deployment of coupon-based monitoring systems in cathodic protection presents new challenges for field technicians and project managers. While international standards provide comprehensive guidelines for coupon design, sizing, and positioning, practical implementation often reveals gaps between theoretical requirements and field reality. This paper presents a field-validated installation procedure that bridges the gap between normative requirements and practical implementation. The procedure integrates ISO 22426 specifications with additional verification steps derived from extensive field experience across different geographical and environmental conditions. The methodology addresses critical installation aspects including pre-installation coupon verification, proper soil compaction techniques, and immediate post-installation validation. Particular attention is given to ensuring permanent electrical contact between the coupon and surrounding soil, which represents the most common cause of measurement anomalies. The proposed procedure has been successfully implemented across multiple international projects, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing installation-related issues and improving measurement reliability. The approach emphasizes preventive measures during the initial installation phase rather than corrective actions after system commissioning. Field validation results show significant improvement in measurement consistency and long-term system reliability when following the proposed procedure. The methodology provides a practical framework that can be adapted to various soil conditions and installation constraints while maintaining compliance with international standards.
