Health Climatology for Destinations in Georgia – The Case of Mravaldzali

This study analyzes the meteorological and human-biometeorological conditions of Mravaldzali (Oni Municipality, Georgia) and their implications for thermal comfort and tourism suitability. Using hourly data from 2015–2025, key meteorological variables were evaluated across multiple temporal scales, and thermal conditions were assessed with UTCI and PET. Tourism-relevant climate characteristics were synthesized through the Climate–Tourism Information Scheme (CTIS). Findings reveal pronounced seasonal differentiation: persistent cold stress from late autumn to early spring reduces the suitability for thermally comfort-dependent outdoor activities, while summer (June–September) shows the highest frequency of thermally neutral conditions and minimal heat stress. Precipitation is generally low and dominated by light rainfall, wind speeds remain mostly moderate, and fog —especially in colder and transitional seasons— represents a relevant atmospheric condition influencing visibility and accessibility, while also contributing to distinctive scenic features such as mist-filled valleys and “sea of clouds” that enhance the landscape character of mountain environments. The study highlights the need for climate-sensitive assessments based on actual tourism exposure hours and recommends establishing local meteorological monitoring and applying higher temporal resolution analyses to better capture microclimatic variability in mountainous environments.
