MORAL CRISIS, CONFESSION AND REDEMPTION IN THE APPRENTICE BY ARUN JOSHI

Arun Joshi’s novel ‘The Apprentice’ (1974) presents a profound exploration of the psychological and moral crisis experienced by individuals in post-independence India. Through the confessional narrative of the protagonist Ratan Rathor, the novel examines themes of alienation, guilt, moral failure, and eventual redemption. The story unfolds as a self-examination in which the narrator revisits his past actions and confronts the ethical compromises that shaped his life. This article analyses the novel as a study of the moral disorientation of modern society and the individual’s struggle to regain integrity. By examining the narrative structure, the theme of confession, and the protagonist’s gradual transformation, the article argues that “The Apprentice” ultimately presents redemption as possible through humility, responsibility, and social commitment
