Evaluating The Action Plan And Implementation Framework For Gully Erosion Mitigation In Kabba, Kabba-Bunu Lga, Kogi State (2020 – 2024)

Gully erosion remains a pressing environmental challenge in Nigeria, with severe impacts on land productivity, infrastructure, and rural livelihoods. In Kabba, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, the phenomenon has intensified over the years due to human and nonhuman activities such as deforestation, poor land management practices, and climatic unpredictability. This study evaluates the action plan and implementation framework for gully erosion mitigation in Kabba between 2020 and 2024. Using a descriptive survey design approach, data were obtained from government reports, community surveys, and stakeholder interviews to assess the extent of implementation, community participation, institutional collaboration, and the sustainability of adopted strategies. The study reveals that while the action plan incorporated preventive, corrective, and community-driven measures such as tree planting, construction of check dams, and sensitisation campaigns, the implementation faced challenges of inadequate funding, weak institutional coordination, and limited technical expertise. Despite these constraints, modest successes were recorded in erosion control, particularly in areas where community-based interventions were prioritised. The findings highlight the importance of integrating local knowledge, strengthening institutional frameworks, and ensuring adequate budgetary allocation for sustainable outcomes. The study concludes that a holistic and participatory implementation framework, coupled with continuous monitoring and evaluation, is vital for mitigating gully erosion and safeguarding livelihoods in Kabba-Bunu. Recommendations are made for strengthening policy support, enhancing community engagement, and adopting climate-resilient land management practices to ensure long-term success.
