New Digital Divide in the Age of AI: Equity and Access in Higher Education

ABSTRACT Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming higher education through personalized learning, intelligent tutoring systems, and predictive analytics. Despite its potential, uneven implementation risks exacerbating educational inequities, particularly in community colleges, where students are disproportionately from historically underserved populations. This article argues that the AI‐driven digital divide is multifaceted, encompassing disparities in access to technology, AI‐related skills, and equitable outcomes in the design, adoption, and application of AI. Drawing on Van Dijk's digital divide framework, which addresses digital disparities in access, skills, and outcomes, this article examines the intersection of artificial intelligence adoption and equity challenges in community colleges. The discussion underscores how algorithmic bias, faculty preparedness, targeted student support, collaborative partnerships, and inclusive design influence equitable implementation. Drawing on current research and institutional practices, this article proposes actionable, equity‐focused strategies to ensure AI serves as a bridge to opportunity rather than a barrier in community colleges.
