Research on Containment of a Kind of Marine Turbocharger

The rotor of a turbocharger is a major high-speed rotating component of Marine diesel engine. Once it breaks and fails, it will generates high-energy debris that can penetrate the casing, posing a threat to the safety of the engine and crew around it. Therefore, conducting the containment test to verify the casing strength margin is a necessary step to meet the traceability requirements of the containment test for Marine turbochargers in IACS UR M73. Traditional test methods are costly, time-consuming and highly dangerous. This paper proposes a weakening scheme based on finite element analysis for the turbine impeller and compressor impeller of a certain type of Marine turbocharger. Numerical simulation is adopted for containment simulation calculation, and experimental verification is completed. By directly comparing the calculation results with the test results, the applicability and accuracy of the model were verified, providing a reference for the subsequent containment analysis and evaluation of Marine turbochargers.
