The Impact of Code-Switching in Multilingual Pakistani Classrooms: A Sociolinguistic Perspective

This research paper explores sociolinguistic aspects of the code-switching process in multilingual classrooms in Pakistan where Pakistani is the majority language and English is the secondary language spoken in high education institutions within the Bahria Town and Lahore area. Located in the linguistically diverse educational context of Pakistan, in which English, Urdu, and local languages are present, the study will focus on the trends in classroom code-switching, its sociolinguistic motivation, and its effects on student understanding, interaction, identity, and power. The proposed study is based on the Interactional Sociolinguistics and the Markedness Model that present the idea of code-switching as a deliberate pattern of negotiating social interactions and contextual sense. In a pragmatic approach, using the mixed-method paradigm, data were gathered in terms of classroom observation, semi-structured interview, and survey questionnaires. Purposive sampling in the form of stratified was applied in order to select 8 classrooms of both public and private colleges with about 12 teachers and 150 students. Discourse and Thematic Analysis were used to analyze qualitative data whereas descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were used to examine the quantitative data. The results indicate that code-switching leads to improved understanding, greater levels of involvement, less language anxiety, and a rebalancing of power in the classroom without causing major obstacles in the acquisition of English. The paper concludes by stating that code-switching can serve as a pedagogical and sociocultural tool in multilingual higher education settings.
