Towards an Open-Source Well Construction Library: Finite Element Solvers to Enable Fully Coupled Drillstring Models

Abstract In this paper, we present recent steps taken to develop an open-source framework to support data-driven and physics-based models for solving drilling dynamics problems pertaining to well construction. This work builds upon ideas initially discussed in the literature (SPE-194082-MS, SPE-208794-MS, SPE-220749-MS). We highlight key aspects of the framework via a discussion centered around a newly developed beam model. The new model was developed using a numerical formulation for a three-dimensional finite-strain beam theory. This finite element solver is written in Python and is the latest addition to a general-purpose open-source library of well construction tools. This library is designed to serve as a robust framework of modeling tools and practices. The capabilities of these tools—such as large rotations, axial and shear deformations—are discussed in detail and highlighted through the implementation of the beam model. The solver developed was subjected to a thorough verification process. The comprehensive steps taken for solver testing help ensure a solid foundation for analysis that can be extended in the future. The open-source library upon which the tools sit facilitates a collaborative environment where engineers and researchers can utilize tools, document experiences, and share insights, thereby benefiting a community of users and subject matter experts. The implementation reported here addresses static analysis; we outline extensions to frequency-domain and transient dynamics as future work.
