Possibilities Purged: Teacher Testimonials of the Trials and Tribulations of Trying for Change in a Mountain West Public High School

Abstract This chapter presents a collective testimonial from four teacher leaders at a Mountain West public high school who spearheaded a culturally responsive detracking initiative aimed at dismantling racialized academic tracking systems. Through counterstories grounded in Critical Race Theory, the authors reflect on their efforts to replace honors courses with inclusive, rigorous alternatives and to implement dual language immersion and restorative justice practices. Their narratives reveal how grassroots reform, rooted in equity and community, can be undermined by shifts in leadership and institutional resistance. The chapter explores the micropolitics of school change, the racialized dynamics of organizational communities, and the emotional toll of racelighting and resistance. Despite setbacks, the authors highlight the transformative potential of teacher-led equity work and advocate for systemic reform that centers student voice, anti‑racist pedagogy, and radical care. Their experiences underscore the fragility of progress and the urgent need for sustained, collective action to create inclusive and affirming educational environments.
